NAME: Robert Thomas Nanna
LOCATION: Chicago, IL
BANDS, PAST & PRESENT: Hey Mercedes, Braid, City on Film, Friction, The Sky Corvair and a bunch of others that don't really count.
LYRICAL INFLUENCES: Basically anything I come in contact with at any given point in time. I always have a few little notebooks with me so whenever something strikes me as interesting, cool, dumb, exciting... I'll just start writing about it. And I'll basically keep writing until my hand hurts. I'm sort of in that Jack Kerouac school of just getting it all down and making no revisions and not worrying about if it all fits together or makes sense. When the time comes to mold it into lyrics, then the chopping block comes out.
FAVORITE SONGWRITERS: Tom Waits is fast becoming my favorite songwriter. I'm so into the thorough storytelling aspect of his songs and with his trademark delivery, it's just so perfect. I also dig Elvis Costello, Ron Sexsmith, Elliott Smith, Mark Kozelek and Neko Case.
FAVORITE LYRICS: My favorite song of all time is "Chesterfield King" by Jawbreaker. I truly love those lyrics. I also believe "Take It With Me" by Tom Waits is amazing.
ONE ARTIST YOU'D LIKE TO ASK ABOUT SONG LYRICS: Again, I'd have to say Tom Waits. He has an amazing way of crafting memorable characters, even with just a few words. Check out "Filipino Box Spring Hog" for some great examples! I'm not sure what I'd ask him, though. Maybe I'd just see if he had any good stories to spare. I bet he does. I bet they're all made up.
